Benkovac is the nearest town to Polača and the centre of Ravni kotari. It lies about 10 kilometres away, roughly a 15-minute drive. The town has the Kaštel Benković fortress, and neighbouring Podgrađe holds the archaeological site of Asseria with Liburnian and Roman remains, its monumental walls the highlight. The Benkovac fair is one of the oldest in this part of Croatia.
